The Chrysalis Awards program, founded in 1994, recognizes the nation’s best work in fourteen general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. The Chrysalis Awards are open to every professional remodeler and design professional in the United States. Continuing to set new standards of professionalism, 77 companies from across the United States were named winners at the 2019 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence. The entries were judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure. Basements 4 U won the 2019 regional award category for a basement remodel over 100,000.00. Basements 4 You won 5 Chrysalis Awards remodeling categories in 2005, were named the 2005 State Remodeler of the year, and were named 2007 National Winner in the Home Theater under 50,000.00 category. “Winning awards in multiple categories is difficult to do. Not only does this speak to Basements 4 You versatility, but to their commitment to quality on every project,” says Ken Kanline, Director of the Awards.

Here is a summary of the project:

A young couple desired a functional yet luxurious extra space to accommodate their growing young family and to entertain friends. The scope of the project included a contemporary look and design basement finish that fit in with the site of the home and blends in with the Colorado lifestyle. Of particular importance to the wife was the need for a wide open space - bright, cheery, and full of natural light.

She also felt the bathrooms should be beautiful and comfortable, yet luxurious. A priority for the husband's wish list was an updated and highly functional media center that would cleverly conceal all their audio equipment that they didn't want in plain sight. We worked with them to design a modern and unique backdrop to their TV, a perfect solution that concealed their audio equipment and beautified the TV wall with a backdrop of rich wood that also provided some architectural interest. The couple wanted to ensure that the basement remodel would not look or feel like a basement.

For example, they didn't want a dark, typical basement stairway that would make them feel like they were in a tunnel. Instead, they preferred a grand stairway that's well lit, roomy and airy, yet has plenty of storage underneath and provides display space for the recreation room items. A beautiful bar and entertainment area was designed and built where the family could enjoy great food and refreshments while watching the big game on TV. The couple also wanted a separate entrance from the basement out to the back yard.

A lot of thought, planning and collaboration between our firm and the clients was required to convert their dark basement stairway into a grand basement entrance. Structural beams replaced walls to create the basement's expansive spaces. In order to provide the exterior door to the backyard, new retaining walls were constructed and changes to the existing foundation added not only a door, but also additional windows so natural light could pour into the basement. Concealing the audio equipment was accomplished by making a few of the random panels behind the TV removable and placing all the audio equipment behind the false wall built behind the TV.

The home was improved dramatically by the addition of a beautiful and updated space loaded with unique features. This couple now has space to have fun while raising their young family. The wife got her cheery, light, bright, open space and the husband got a first class bar and entertainment area to entertain family and friends. The clients say they are over the moon with the design, functionality of the space, and the overall results of a construction project that went smoothly, was on time, and on budget.

Golfer's Paradise

Our clients bought a ranch style home built in the late 1990’s and wanted to remodel the whole main floor. The most important thing they wanted to change was the “closed off” feel of separate spaces that made the home feel somewhat dark and closed in. They wanted to open things up to create free-flowing spaces with a contemporary update that would allow plenty of natural light to flood the home and open the family room and kitchen spaces up to the patio outside. This would significantly enlarge their seasonal living space and allow them to take advantage of their golf course views.

A large part of the rear of the home was removed to construct a covered patio and add a NanaWall sliding glass wall system - perfect for a picture frame effect of the outdoor patio and golf course. Upon entering the home from the front door, you now see beyond the family room and patio all the way out to the golf course. The patio boasts a large stone fireplace and electric infrared heaters so the whole family can enjoy the outdoor area even during the chilly early spring and late fall seasons. The kitchen was totally gutted and new bright, white shaker panel cabinets were installed. Subway tile and floating shelves alongside the oven hood compliment the clean, bright look. Currently in high demand, an induction cooktop was selected for this kitchen. Thermador-Bosch appliances are featured and include a drawer microwave system and wine refrigerator. Some glass cabinet doors were selected to further boost the kitchen’s appeal and beauty by showcasing favorite pieces and lightening the visual load of wood and metal. As a personal and meaningful touch, it was important to the owner to incorporate his great-great grandfather’s antique butcher block table into the design and function of the remodeled kitchen.

The family room features a contemporary fireplace with TV above. The mantel is made of concrete. New floors were added to the already existing oak floors and stained dark. The outdoor patio flooring was previously concrete and it was removed for the installation of stone pavers which lend and old-world look and feel. Motorized retractable screens appear at the touch of a button and disappear when not needed. Perfect for indoor and outdoor living spaces, these custom made screens provide fresh air, shade from the sun, climate control, protection from insects and a bit of privacy.

Our clients are extremely happy with their home remodel and agree that life on the golf course is right on par with what they desired.

Empty Nester Cottage

This lovely cottage style kitchen remodel features many design elements that all reflect the old world cottage style. The kitchen island top is a walnut butcher block and lights below the cabinets add ambiance and warmth. Wood beams were installed between the kitchen and dining room to visually separate the spaces, provide warmth, and incorporate a bit of rustic Colorado style into the home’s interior. Arabesque mosaic tile creates visual interest behind the oven and LED lights spotlight decorative kitchen soffit spaces where the owners exhibit collectibles. Crown moulding utilized throughout further compliments the unique cottage style and a combination of horizontal and vertical shiplap was used to employ the intrigue and fascination of an age past.

The smaller kitchen pantry packs a lot of functional space. Featuring pull-out drawers, beadboard backing and crown moulding, the pantry has a microwave, sink, and custom cabinetry - leaving plenty of room for food, staples, and storage. The pantry door is a highly functional and sturdy sliding barn door custom made from semi-trailer salvage.

Random width tea-stained white oak floors were chosen for the kitchen. The dining room features a beautiful and durable herringbone pattern brick inlay floor and built in plate shelves on both sides of the dining room windows provide a place to feature family pictures or collectibles. We Love A Good Challenge

This unique basement remodeling project was completed for one of our previous clients that we’ve done several projects for in the past. Both owners enjoy working out and they wanted a nice exercise facility they could enjoy in their own home. They bought an existing home in a great neighborhood in the heart of Fort Collins but this home had a couple of challenges. The basement finish has very low ceilings and the mechanical equipment was spread throughout the basement. For example, the furnace equipment was in one room, the electrical equipment was in another room, the hot tub pumps were in one corner space, and the humidifier equipment was contained in another corner space.

We love a good challenge so we discussed several design ideas and options with the homeowners that would best address these issues. They decided on an old warehouse feel and design for their in-home gym.

To allow for more head-room we left the heating duct work exposed and recessed the LED lighting into the floor joist. Instead of hiding the mechanical equipment with walls and doors, we built steel cages around them and made them part of the architecture. We also put a brick wall up on some of the foundation walls but left the other foundation walls unchanged. For the flooring, we used both wood and rubber flooring so the home gym has proper flooring designed to bring both durability and warmth to the space while seamlessly contributing to the overall warehouse style. The basement bathroom is very upscale yet maintains a rustic look and feel. All of these elements worked together to create the old warehouse style the owners were seeking.

This was such a fun project! Plenty of thought, consideration, and design went into creating this warehouse gym for our clients. We thoroughly enjoyed working with them, as we have on their previous projects. As you can see, the final result was beautiful, unique, and just what the owners wanted in their home gym space.
